One Thing You Should Never Do
Staying organized isn’t always easy! It takes diligence and hard work, plus there are all sorts of things that can trip us up along the way. However, there is one thing that really stands out to me as one of the number one reasons we have trouble staying organized.
Here is the one thing you should never do if you want to stay organized: don’t keep waiting until you have the perfect solution or perfect system before you get organized or put things away. Waiting until you have just the right containers or until you’ve developed the perfect system is the fastest way to stay stuck in chaos!
There’s a couple reasons why this will keep you from being organized. Number one, it really gives you an excuse to put off organizing and tidying. Therefore, piles of clutter keep building up while you keep waiting. Second, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever find the absolute perfect system for every space in your home! I definitely have plenty of areas of my home that really aren’t Pinterest worthy at all. (I just don’t usually share those spaces on the blog.) I have some ideas for improving some spaces, and some spaces just have me entirely stumped. However, I do my best to put things away, even if my system is not completely ideal.
Need an example? The drawer where I keep our sheets looks pretty terrible! I’ve made some attempts at folding the fitted sheets, but they end up looking like a big wad. I’ve watched several Youtube videos on how to neatly fold a fitted sheet, but I still haven’t mastered that skill (and am a little doubtful that I ever will). However, it doesn’t stop me from putting those sheets away. I still stuff them in the drawer and try to pretend like it doesn’t exist until I need it.
Here’s another example where I completely failed at taking my own advice. The bottom drawer of my baby girl’s dresser is pretty deep and holds a bunch of random stuff that doesn’t fold neatly (including the dreaded fitted crib sheets that I couldn’t fold neatly to save my life). It doesn’t look very neat and tidy, and I’ve been wanting to improve it. However, my lack of fitted sheet folding skills combined with the rather random assortment of stuff that lives in the drawer has me scratching my head to come up with a really beautiful storage solution. That definitely doesn’t stop me from dreaming of one, though.
A few weeks ago, it was getting cold, and I had lost my daughters winter hat from last year, which I thought would still fit her. I pulled everything out of that drawer searching for it. Instead of taking 60 seconds to put everything back in, I just left it all in a pile beside her dresser (since of course I was going to soon find the perfect storage solution and put everything back). Well, three weeks later, I still didn’t have any brilliant storage ideas nor had I magically learned how to fold fitted crib sheets, so the pile of junk was still there taunting me each time I walked in the room! I ended up taking 60 seconds to at least stuff it all back in the drawer. It would have been so much better for me to have done it right away rather than waiting for the perfect storage solution.
Here is a recent scope I did on this topic where I shared a little bit more detail on my own struggle.

Thanks for sharing some of your less than perfect spaces! Yes, I am guilty of waiting for the perfect solutions…ugh! And those fitted sheets! I, too, have watched youtube videos trying to master folding them! 🙂

This is fantastic! I love your mess. It is so uplifting to know that others have spots that are chaos like I do!

I do the best on my fitted sheet, put it on top of the folded flat sheet, and stuff them inside a matching pillowcase. No mess to stress about, and the entire set is ready if needed.

This is exactly the problem I have…waiting until I have the perfect system. I am so happy you did this video, because I have currently have system in my dressing area to organize toiletries and makeup. It’s not “pretty” because I just use the sterilite drawers and I keep saying I need something better, but the clutter just kept piling up. So as part of my assignments for getting organized, I just said I am going to use what I have because I truly can never find anything!!! If i do decided to buy some of those acrylic “pretty” makeup organizers, I can re-purpose the sterilite drawers to organize my nail art in my nail room. I am so excited that I found you!!! Thank you for such great information.

Thank you so much for sharing! One look in my office and it is obvious that I am guily of waiting for the perfect organizational solution!! I am inspired by you, though, and will make the effort to at least file things away where they currently belong while working on finding a better way.
On another note, however, I did recently organize my linen closet. I refolded all of my towels and stacked them fold-side out so they look very neat. As for the sheets, I matched up all the sets and put the flat sheet, fitted sheet and one pillowcase into the other pillowcase and stacked them neatly on the bottom shelf. No one needs to know that the fitted sheet is wadded up in a messy ball when all you see is a stack of flattened out/stuffed pillowcases.

I love that you are transparent on your blog!
I am beginning a long hard remodel of my organising systems here at home. Today you helped me identify my biggest obstacle. So I am off to simply get started.
Thanks

I saw on TV or Internet the idea of taking your sheets and Putting them in one of the pillow cases. Even if you can’t fold well it still looks better and makes it easy for smaller kids to help put away.

It’s comforting to hear I’m not the only one with this problem. It’s my absolute worst! I always describe it as half of my stuff (maybe less) is perfectly organized, and the rest is basically on the floor. If I can’t put it away “right” I just leave it out. Thank you for the pep talk and reassurance I can beat this 🙂

I have OCD and if it can’t be perfect then I don’t try. Boy does this blog strike home for me.

So true Laura! Great advice and fitted sheet folding is the worst!

This is exactly my problem!! I feel like “ughh I can’t do this without ____ ” and then I never get to it! This makes perfect sense.

This resonated with me so much it felt like my conscience tugging at me to do the right thing!
For me, waiting till I have the right system has meant there’s a chain of clutter piles – I can’t put the stuff away from the bedroom till I have the right thing there, so I can’t put all of the laundry away and it’s in the hall to hurry me up. So it’s silly to put the dry cleaning in the car boot because it can wait till I have a clean place in my bedroom and I might as well wait till there’s something better for the papers before I take them off the kitchen bench …
Enough!
I’ll take your advice and spend the time now. It’s easier to think in a clear space – the house will end up like a crazy lady’s otherwise!

Yes, yes, yes! I’m so guilty of waiting until I have the perfect solution in so many areas of my life, but definitely in organization and home decorating. I love this post and love your blog. And I {heart} planners too. 🙂

That is so my problem. It take being disorganized for a while and getting really frustrated before I jump in and do something, even though it may not be my ideal fix. Thanks for sharing your own experience.

I can totally relate! I tend to let things pile up until I have time to implement an awesome solution, but it’s better to just work with what you have rather than using that as an excuse to put it off.

Looks like a lot of us can relate! By the way, I too, couldn’t master folding fitted sheets via watching YouTube videos or Martha Stewart’s old show. It took having someone (a guy!) show me in person and now, it’s a piece of cake. So, don’t give up–maybe one of your friends knows how and would be happy to show you!

Oh def, I’m 100% guilty, I always hate sorting the washing out and putting it away in the wardrobe, so I now get lots of coat hangers, put washing straight on and dry them in the open and then straight into the wardrobe instead of folding clothes way into draws x

I fold the fitted sheets as much as possible, tuck in the messy bits & roll them. Same for towels.
I try to maintain organisation – great at it at work, but parts of the house are a struggle. Especially craft stuff. I keep things thinking “one day I can learn this craft” or “one day I might be able to use that” but one day has yet to happen. So, a little at a time (distressing as it is) I’m letting it go. Giving things to the grandkids to create with is far better than just tossing it away.
Now slowly working through the house, working on just getting rid of stuff.
