I think the car is one of the more overlooked but very important places to organize. After all, most of us are in our cars daily, so shouldn’t they be organized?
I have a few tips for you about how to keep your car organized, then I’ll share a video from I Heart Planners team member Hannah where she walks you through exactly how her car is organized.
And of course, there’s also a free printable! Keep reading.
My Tips for Organizing Your Car
I recommend keeping a checklist of all the items you need to keep in your car. I’ve got a printable right here to help you do that. It will really help speed up the process if you take the time to do this. Everyone’s needs are different as far as what to keep in the car. The list will also allow you to hand off the list to someone else, so they can load the car with the exact thing you need while you’re busy doing something else.
I cannot emphasize this enough, and I know it’s hard, but try to take things out of the car that don’t belong as soon as possible. Before I had kids, I always did this as soon as I got out of the car. Now that I have two kids to get out of the car (with one in my arms), this usually doesn’t happen right away, but the goal is to do it each evening. (Note, I said that’s my goal which basically means do as I say and not as I do – LOL.)
Keep a roll of little trash bags in your glove box. That way you always have one bag for trash.
Use containers. There’s nothing worse than having a bunch of stuff strewn all over your car. Containers are key. This keeps everything corralled and makes it easy to bring the container inside to restock. I use multipurpose bins from The Container Store, because I have so many of them, and I use them for everything. Hannah uses a container like this, and the great news is that it’s only $11! I think I might buy it myself, because I love all the different compartments.
