How to Organize without Breaking the Bank
I love seeing beautifully organized spaces with beautiful matching bins and fancy labels, but sometimes that can be rather pricey. The Container Store is definitely one of my favorite stores, but it’s not known for being very budget friendly. So what should we do when our dream organizing isn’t within our budget? It’s not the time to give up on getting organized or on make organizing systems look pretty. It’s time to get creative with your organizing solutions! I'd love to show you how to organize on a budget.
Here’s my best advice for getting organized without breaking the bank:
- The most important organizing step is completely free! Fortunately, purging and decluttering is the most impactful thing you can do to get organized, and it’s completely free. Hooray! Getting rid of unused items can immediately transform a cluttered space into a neat looking space. If you need help deciding what to keep and what to toss, read my post about how to take control of your clutter.
- Think outside the box to repurpose items for storage containers. Often, getting creative about what you use for storage containers can provide you with perfect storage absolutely free! Repurpose items like shoeboxes, gift bags, coffee canisters, Mason jars, Cool Whip containers, glass spaghetti sauce jars, etc for storage. Often, you can even collect several matching containers this way, if it’s an item you use a lot.
- Decorate and unify the look of miscellaneous containers by decorating them with spray paint, fabric, or wrapping paper. In the ideal world, we’d all be able to afford to go out and buy matching containers for every project, but we can still make our systems look nice even on a tiny budget. You can spray paint almost anything! You can get a bunch of miscellaneous baskets at Goodwill super cheap and then spray paint them the same color to unify them. I’ve also seen lots of items covered in fabric, wrapping paper, duct tape, or washi tape. The sky is the limit. Follow my DIY-Smaller Projects board on Pinterest to see the ideas I’ve collected. Here’s just one spray painting idea:
- Unify the look of mis matched containers by using matching labels. Just adding matching labels to random containers can really help to unify the look and take the overall organized feel of the space up a notch. Buying a few labels is much cheaper than purchasing new containers or bins. For example, here I organized my unfinished laundry area without spending a dime by using the containers I already had with matching labels:
- A word of caution: Just because you DIY it, doesn’t mean it saves money. I feel like a word of caution is needed here. Often, adding your own DIY touch to something is both fun, rewarding, and budget friendly. However, just because you do something yourself doesn’t autotmatically make it cheaper. Honestly, some DIY projects do nothing but cost you a lot of extra time without any money savings. The key is to DIY strategically where it really saves you money. If a project requires you to purchase special tools or expensive materials, it may not even save money! The best way to really save money is to use what you already have on hand.
- Shop at the Dollar Tree, Goodwill, garage sales, and Craigslist. There really are a lot of places to find organizing supplies that don’t cost a fortune. Places like Goodwill or garage sales are excellent for finding really cheap containers and bins. Kind of like with exercise equipment, people often have great intentions, buy a bunch of supplies but never use them. The other place that has amazing brand new organizing bins is the Dollar Tree. They have some amazing items for just a dollar! I share all my favorite organizing items from the Dollar Tree here.
- Wisely consider where it may be worth it to splurge. If you do have some extra room in your budget, there’s nothing wrong with splurging on some organizing supplies. The important thing is to choose wisely, and splurge in the places where it will have the most impact. For example, I would splurge if I found the ideal way to organize something that I use every single day. However, I probably wouldn’t do the same for something I access only once a month.
Hope my ideas were helpful to you and good luck organizing without breaking the bank! What are your favorite budget organizing ideas and strategies?

I save the wire containers caterers use when we have a function at work. They are perfect for corralling towels and sheets!

Where did you get the cloth pouches and basket they are in??? ..I love them :o)
LauraJane Says
Post authorThe basket is from Target. My mom made the pouches for me. (Isn’t she a great mom?) She embroidered them with the names of the things I wanted to put in them (like washi, paperclips, pens, etc), so I could be super organized! She also sells them at craft fairs and things. (If you are interested in getting some made for you, e-mail iheartplanners@gmail.com)

Thank you ..my local Targets had baskets like these but in white and black …did you spray paint this one and it so what did you need to do prime it before? Type of paint you used? Love your color choices! My washi would never fit LOL!!

Post authorI didn’t spray paint. I probably got it two years ago, but you probably could spray paint.

What great timing! I’m sitting right next to my big Ikea Expedit unit, wishing I had a few more of the just-right things to make it look a bit tidier. At least half of the 16 squares look cute, several with outside-the-box storage solutions, so I just need to keep my eyes and mind open when I’m at thrift shops. I love my free red tool box that I use to store office supplies, a five-tiered aluminum tiffin-style container for camping that I use for sewing supplies, and striped metal pails that store pens and pencils. They look so much more fun than just a bunch of matching baskets that I wouldn’t be able to keep straight what was in which! It’s also fun to remember how sweet my husband was to make a quick u-turn on the way to church one morning when I spotted the red tool box sitting on a curb waiting to go to a good home. 🙂

Post authorSounds like you do a great job being creative with your storage, and sometimes that ends up being the cutest and most useful storage. So sweet of your husband to stop for you – and you can’t beat free!

What wonderful suggestions! Thanks so much for sharing! I can’t wait to use your ideas when we move into our new house in a couple of months. After living with my parents for 3-4 months just having our own space will be nice. Where did you acquire the adorable aqua and red zipper pouches? They are too cute!

Post authorI’m sure it will be nice to have your own space! Moving is a lot of work, but I think it can be exciting to start organizing with a blank slate. My mom made the pouches for me.

I came here for the pouches and only got same “‘reuse, spay paint” advise. If you post something so lovely to get us to your site, then be nice and give the directions for making the nice pouches. Those are lovely.

i love those pouches too. Could you please send me a clearer picture of the pouch?

One of the things I did quite a few years ago was spray painted boxes as containers. I collected different sizes boxes for my needs and I kinda gave them a trail run…would what I wanted fit in them…Then I labeled them usually with permanent markers. It gave me time to decide what kind of container would I like for the area but also the ability to save for it and catch it on sale. Sometimes the container needed to change because of accumulation or other things and then I felt like it was okay to throw the box away if I could not find another use for it.
I hope that helps some who want to be organized and doesn’t really have the money. I had fun collecting boxes. My kids still have fun memories about that season in our lives. Aldi has boxes with lids.

I too loved the pouches. But since I’m not a seamstress I got to thinking about alternate ways to do this. Using clear makeup pouches (that I have a lot of) would work and I also have a bin. They could be unified by using the same sort of tags to label the contents. I would no have considered that if I hadn’t seen your photo. Thanks for the idea!

Maybe try the 3hole plastic pencil pouches that fit in binders. Wal-Mart puts them on sale after schools starts. I bought a bunch once for a dime each. See thru in bright colors. Zippered or ziplock

If you have the luxury of choosing between square containers and round, go with square. You waste a lot of real estate with round containers, while squares and rectangles fit together like a puzzle. Ask me how I know?
