How Soon Can You Make Money From Your Blog?

A lot of people wonder how long it will take to make money after starting a blog. Can you make money right away? Do you have to wait until you have 100,000 pageviews a month? How long do you have to work for free before you start seeing the fruits of your labor?

These are great questions! To answer them completely, I’d need a magic crystal ball that tells the future (which, unfortunately, doesn’t exist). However, there are a few things I can tell you about this.

Number one, you DO NOT need a massive audience to start making a profit. Lots of people think they need hundreds of thousands of pageviews or an e-mail list into the thousands before they can actually make money. That’s definitely not true! I’ve heard of many people with less than 500 people on their e-mail list who launched a product and made thousands.

Number two, know that it will take you some time to start making a steady income (but probably not as long as you think it will). If you desperately need a job that will help you pay next month’s rent, then blogging probably isn’t for you right now. However, if you’re willing to put in some extra work on your blog over the next few months, you’ll soon start seeing a return. It took me several months to start seeing a real profit, but it’s grown exponentially from there.

Number three, there are some things you can do to make a profit much sooner. If you simply publish a blog post regularly and put up a few ads in the sidebar or use a few affiliate links, it will probably take you more like years to make a full time income. However, if you focus on building an e-mail list from day one and then create your own product within a few months, you will make an income much sooner. It’s about working smarter, not harder, and creating your own product (which is easier than you think). Marketing to your e-mail list is definitely the way to do that.

Let me tell you Abby’s story. A few years ago, Abby was a stay at home mom to her two little boys, and she absolutely loved it. She often wished, though, that there was something she could do to give her a creative outlet, use the degree that she had worked so hard to achieve, and make a little money to take some of the financial burdens off of her husband’s shoulders. She tried looking into work from home-type jobs, but none of them seemed to be legit or were flexible enough for what she needed.

Then she discovered blogging, not even thinking about making money with her blog. She started purely for the creative escape, but she soon caught the blogging bug.
