Days 8, 9, & 10: Build Your Courage Muscle
Yes, I admit, I’m totally cheating by combining days. Just got done with the #allumenewbies twitter party! I’m getting excited.
So the last time I posted, I talked about the importance of taking a break. However, lest we carry that idea too far, I need to remind us that we DO need to exercise that courage muscle. Don’t let it grow stagnant! Like a physical muscle, it will atrophy without consistent use.
When you have to do something you are afraid of, look at it as an opportunity to build your courage muscle. Every little thing helps. Whether the thing you fear turns out well or poorly, you still had a chance to build up that muscle.
When things go well, you’ll build up confidence for the next thing you need to overcome. Most of the time, when things go poorly, you’ll realize that it really wasn’t so bad and you have nothing to be afraid of.
Look for even small opportunities to build up that muscle. If you have a comfort as tiny as mine, those opportunities will be all around you! For me, it’s greeting a stranger or the cashier at the grocery store, or actually engaging a coworker in conversation. It’s sending an e-mail, tweet, or leaving a comment on a blog. It’s putting myself a little more out there in a blog post. It’s picking up the phone and actually calling someone. Those are the little things I fear that I use to help me build my courage muscle.
How do you build your courage muscle?
Maureen Says
I building my courage muscle in a very big way. My sister has invited my family to enjoy 10 days in Florida over the Christmas break. I have a great fear of travelling (flying is out of the question) and we are driving down from Canada! I have told my husband and daughters that my decision would be fear based, so allowed them to decide….and yup, we are going! So I have just over two months to build that muscle!
