How to Choose a Planner
It's getting close to the end of the year, and that means it's time to choose a planner for 2015. There are tons of different options out there – weekly planners, monthly planners, daily planners, spiral bound, coil bound, discbound, Erin Condren, Plum Paper, Simplified Planner, Day Designer, and the list goes on! How do you know which one is right for you? I'll show you how to choose a planner that's right for you.
Here are a few things you need to keep in mind when choosing a planner:
- A planner is simply a tool, not a solution. While I'm a HUGE fan of planning, no planner is going to magically give you more time, make you more disciplined, or inject loads of energy into your life. YOU are the one who will use the planner as a tool to help you get more done. So many times in my life I thought what I needed was the perfect planner or planning system to MAKE me more productive instead of the other way around. When you look at it that way, it really helps you to make the best choice.
- On that note, there is no such thing as a perfect planning system. Don't do what I've done, and wait to get started until you find the absolutely perfect planner. There is no such thing and your needs are likely constantly changing. I go more into depth about this in the first lesson of my free Get Organized Once and For All ecourse, so I won't repeat myself here.
- Think about what you want your planner to accomplish. Ideally, do this before you even start looking at planners. It's easy to quickly get caught up in seeing all the nice features of a planner or seeing how other people use their planners before you even really consider what you need your planner to do for you. Do you just need to keep track of appointments so you do not forget them? Do you need help staying motivated and on top of mundane daily tasks like house cleaning or errands? It might even help to write that down.
- What is or isn't working in your current planner (or lack thereof). Think about what has or hasn't worked well for you in the past and use that information to help you decide what planner you should use.
- Decide what major features you'd like in your planner:
- Portability – Do you need to carry it around with you everywhere or will it just sit on your desk? Obviously if you want to carry it around, you wouldn't choose something huge and heavy.
- Granularity – Do you want a monthly planner, weekly planner, or detailed day-per-page planner? At various times, I've even used two types of planners (a weekly planner and detailed day-per-page planner).
- Binding Style (permanent or removable) – Do you want a complete coil bound planner that you can alter or would you rather make your own planner using something like a discbound style or 3 ring binder?
- Consider the design. You'll likely be looking at your planner a lot throughout the year, so you definitely want a style that you really love! It may seem frivolous, but I've found that it makes such a difference in how motivated I am to keep using my planner.
Here's a video where I explain things you might want to consider when choosing a planner:
In the rest of this series I'll be reviewing and comparing several different planners, which might help you make a choice. I will end the series by showing you exactly how I plan my days (which has changed quite a bit from the last time I posted about it now that my days caring for a newborn are much less structured). What is your favorite planner? Are there any planners you are hoping that I review?

I actually sat down 3 weeks ago after 4 years of planner/home management binder fails, and seriously asked myself what I was trying to accomplish and why I failed miserably. I wanted to be more organized, I just wasn’t getting there. I came up with an initial 5 sections that I was struggling to stay organized in, and worked from there finding the printables that matched my need, even designing a few that I couldn’t find. I was making the worst mistake- I was trying to make a system designed with someone else’s needs in mind work for me. Epic fail!!

Post authorWay to go designing a system that works for you! It is key to take the time initially to really think about what has and hasn’t worked in the past and what you really need.

It’s super important to remember no system is going to be perfect!
What works for you now, may not work three months from now, for whatever reason. And that’s okay! I’ve been in my planer for less than two months, and have changed my calendar pages three times – and I’m sure this isn’t the last. I didn’t have to change because I was bored or they weren’t pretty enough, but because they weren’t right for me and what I needed.

First of all: I really enjoy your site a lot! 😀 Thanks for this awesome blog.
Just in the past few weeks I was searching the internet for planning and organizing solutions and then I wanted to try a planner. It never has worked for me in the past. I had paper planners and tried apps, but I never sticked to it.
I then found the Bullet Journal system. And I really think that is what I always needed. It’s fully customizable and you can do it with every planner. If you like filofax or similar systems you can use it and add a bullet journal part.
I just started it less than a week ago, but I really enjoy it. I love that I have enough space for all my thoughts because there are no specific spaces aligned to one day/ week/ month. You can create your own overviews or use printables. It may not be a system for everyone, but for me it seems almost perfect.
Main reason it’s a system fitting for me: Before I wrote everything I had to remember on post-it notes which lay around my desk and I couldn’t find anything. Now I just write everything in my journal. It may be a bit messy, too, because there are sections like “christmas ideas” in the middle of my daily planner. But it is way less messy than the post-its. And with the index I can find everything later on.
I also use washi and colors to make it look nicer 😀
Sorry for sort of “advertising” this system, but I’m a bit excited at the moment to finally have found something 😀 And I just wanted to share..
I’m still really fascinated by all those weekly planners you show here. They look so amazing.

Post authorSo glad you find the bullet system that works for you. I have seen it, and I do think it looks like a great flexible system. Definitely is better to have everything in one place than a bunch of random notes everywhere!

I have tried planners in the past and been relatively successful. BUT I haven’t used one in many years…and right now my life is extra upside-down as I just lost my job. I ordered an Erin Condren a couple of months ago after watching many, many videos by people who have customized to make it work for them.
I have changed my “system” of the sections a couple of times, but think I have found a good fit. It is pretty and totally portable (very important). I am glad I found your blog too though, because I am confident I can always learn better ways to get things done.
I love the layout of your planner too, and if I wanted a second one yours would probably be it. Thanks for offering the smaller size for those of us who don’t want a notebook. 🙂

I’ve gone with a week on 2 pages but I’ve only purchased my first planner this year. I think I went with it because that’s what I did in high school, I’m actually getting good at keeping track of bills and study and shifts.
I’m trying to put my savings into it but actually saving is hard.
I’m enjoying reading everything I can find though 🙂

Oh my gosh, I would have loved to listen to your video but you have so many video adverts on your site that the site is super slow and makes the video break up. Eek! I can’t even write this comment in one go! It slows everything down. Get rid of them. I would have just left the blog ages ago but thought you should know. Good luck!

Post authorThanks for letting me know. This is the first I’ve heard anyone having a slow load problem. I’ll definitely keep an ear out to see if it’s a common issue.

Your site is lovely first off full of insight on planners and planning. I started with a happy planner fell into the trap of buying ALL the accessories and gear. It was fun for a while but as you said a planner Is a tool. Often times our tools of getting things accomplished and in order is not perfectly well perfect. I think I’ve tried every planner since then. A coil bound doesn’t give me room to write ( I’m a blogger and brain dumps and post outlines come in the plenty ) realizing that I likely needed more than one planner to keep things in order in compartments was helpful lastly in planning it’s not always going to be ideal perfectly placed stickers and gushy quotes that make sure you get the tasks at hand accomplished life isn’t an Instagram post it gets a bit messy and planning sometimes does too. Thanks for the real insight .
