The Real Problem with Homemaking
A couple of years ago I read an article online that made me SO MAD!!!
I’ve read a lot of things online that I don’t agree with, and sometimes those things bother me. I’ve seen things that are just flat out incorrect. Helpful hint: don’t believe everything you read on the internet.
However, this particular article was different, and at first, I couldn’t even figure out why it irked me so much more than usual. It was about two years ago, and I was browsing Facebook on my phone while I nursed my baby.
I ran across a blog post someone shared about how to be a better homemaker. This was at a time when my homemaking efforts were at an all-time low. We had recently moved, and I still didn’t feel settled in our new place. I had an infant and a two-year-old. I was trying to run a growing business without much childcare.
Needless to say, my house was a bit of a wreck half the time. Dinner was takeout from one of the two restaurant options in our tiny town or frozen pizza way more often than I would like. To be honest, I wasn’t even enjoying myself. I was living my dream of being a mom and getting to work some from home, but it wasn’t feeling like the dream I had imagined.
Naturally, I clicked over to read the post about how to be a better homemaker hoping it would contain some sort of helpful tips on how to keep my home spotless in ten minutes a day or something like that. Well, I got a bit more advice than I bargained for!
I honestly can’t remember all the details of the article, and I wish I had thought to bookmark it so I could go back it. However, it was written by a seasoned homemaker with lots of kids who were now grown and had kids of their own. She said the reason so many younger women are struggling with homemaking and motherhood is because they aren’t good at it. So they basically just give up, declare themselves a hot mess, and focus on something else. You need to be somewhat good at something to enjoy it. If you don’t invest time and energy in learning how to do it well, then it won’t be fun.
When I read that I was immediately angry and offended. I did feel like a hot mess half the time, and I certainly had given up to some degree on creating a home that functioned the way I wanted. But how dare she accuse ME of giving up or not trying hard enough or not investing in learning how to do it or not being good at it? I shoved my phone back in my pocket and determined to forget that I’d ever even read that lousy article!!!!
Obviously, the forgetting part didn’t happen, because here I am telling you about it two years later. The thing is I couldn’t stop thinking about. It finally dawned on me that it bothered me so much because I knew she was right at least to some degree. Maybe she could have stated it more gently – but there was still truth at the core of what she said.
I really was giving up before trying. I was fairly new to motherhood overall and certainly new to managing two kids. I was expecting to just know how to do it all without putting in the time to learn – but deep down I knew it didn’t work that way.
If I wanted to learn how to do something new in my business, I would usually invest in training and spend lots of time learning and practicing. I didn’t expect to be great at first. Often, the first few times I tried, I wasn’t all that good and I didn’t enjoy it. (Don’t go read my first blog posts – they are quite embarrassing!!!! I have come a long way). However, as I practiced and improved I started taking pride in my work and having fun!
I realized I needed to do the same thing with homemaking. I needed to invest some time and energy in learning. I needed to have realistic and reasonable expectations, but that didn’t mean I should give up when it got tough. I needed to take pride in my homemaking work. So I did just that.
Don’t get me wrong – I still struggle. Me and my home are far from perfect. But I do enjoy it a lot more when I put real effort into it.
