Day 3: What do you have to gain?
Yesterday we thought about all the negative outcomes of facing our fear. We considered the worst case scenario.
Today, think about what you have to gain if you face your fears – the best case scenario. After you list the possible positive outcomes compare it to your negative list from yesterday. Often, the positives outweigh the negatives – you have more to gain than you have to lose.
It’s also usually true that the more you have to lose, the more unpleasant the outcomes that you fear, the more you have to gain.
In this exercise, it’s important to list the best possible outcomes. This isn’t necessarily what you think is most likely to occur – but what you think would be the best possible outcome.
If we take my example of attending the conference, I realized that I could have a great time, enjoy myself, meet lots of fantastic people, make real connections, learn quite a lot from the sessions, gain some motivation and clarity in my blogging, gain some confidence, improve my social skills, and so on.
