5 Things You DON’T Need to Start a Home-Based Business

Rewind 10 years, and there I was, seriously toying with the idea of starting my own business, but unable to bring myself to do it. I loved the idea of it: flexibility, being my own boss, getting to work on what I enjoyed and pursue my passions! But I was downright terrified. I was convinced that every other entrepreneur had something special that I didn’t. Turns out, they didn’t.

Now that I’ve been doing this for years, I’ve come to realize there really isn’t anything magical about it! All you need is a strong desire and a willingness to commit. Unfortunately, I was stuck in the research and planning phase for two years before I was willing to put myself out there and click “Publish” on my first blog post.

Number 1: You DON’T have to be tech-savvy

While it’s true that most businesses include some kind of online presence, it’s not true that you have to be a computer programmer or have a degree in IT in order to start your own business! There are so many helpful tools that make it easy to do anything from starting a blog, to handling social media, to setting up an online shop. On top of that, there are countless tutorials (even free ones!) that can teach you how to do pretty much anything you want to learn. Besides, once you get things set up, you probably won’t need to touch them again very often, and down the road you may even be able to hire out the technical side of your business!

Number 2: You DON’T have to be great on camera

I am living proof of this fact! I used to be incredibly shy, and the thought of being on camera was inconceivable to me. But you know what? Once I committed to doing it, no matter how I felt about it, it started to get easier. All it took was practice. But even if you are bound and determined to avoid the camera, don’t worry. There are plenty of business people who never publish video of themselves. It’s not a requirement!

Number 3: You DON’T have to be a total expert

You want to know a little secret? Even though my business is all about organizing and planning, I am not the world’s most organized person! You do not have to be an expert on a topic in order to run a business around it. In fact, most people are really interested in watching your journey. As long as you have a passion for what you’re doing, go for it! People will appreciate your realness and authenticity, even if you have not reached expert-level.

Number 4: You DON’T have to be good at all of the components of your business

There are a lot of things that need to get done in a business. There may be video editing, writing, photography, accounting, legal matters, etc. Maybe you really love one or two of those things, but chances are, you aren’t going to be a pro at ALL of them. I’m really no good at accounting and handling legal matters. And to be honest, it’s no fun! But it’s still worth it to me to tolerate those tasks so that I can spend the rest of my time doing what I love.

Number 5: You DON’T have to be free from failure

Let me be up front and honest with you: You WILL fail at something! That is true for every business owner, no matter who you are. A lot of things in the business world are trial and error. This doesn’t have to scare you away, though! I have found that I have learned so much from my failures, even more than from my successes! The only true failure is to stop trying. Surround yourself with friends that can lift you up and encourage you to keep going, and don’t let fear of failure keep you down.
